introduction
What is Job-sharing?
Job-sharing involves sharing one job between two people. It allows pairs to share roles and responsibilities, keeping experienced talent in the industry and addressing areas of skills shortage within film and HETV.
CrewHQ, in collaboration with ReelTime Media and Warner Bros. Discovery, is supporting job-sharing through targeted training for crew, Heads of Department and production teams, alongside clear guidance, toolkits and best practice resources.
By embedding this support into production processes and raising awareness through campaigns, job-sharing is becoming easier to understand, implement and sustain on set.
There are lots of ways to job-share depending on your personal needs and the demands of your role. Below are the most common options for sharing your working hours:
Split week: One person works Monday to Wednesday, and the other
Wednesday to Friday. In this type of share, Wednesday becomes the
handover day where both partners are working.
Split day: One person works the morning, and the other works the
afternoon with 30 minutes to an hour for handover in the middle of the
day.
Weekly: Sharers alternate weeks and handover on a Friday.
By filming block: Dependent on the production and length of block,
the blocks are divided up between the job-sharers. Both sharers would
be present together for catch-up days mid-block, and then have a
handover day(s) at the end of the block.
By expertise: A role can be split dependent on each person’s skillset,
where tasks are divided based on each sharers’ expertise.
By location: Dependent on role and production, job-sharers would
not necessarily need a in-person handover, but would keep shared
documents and both be present at recces.
However the hours are shared, every pair needs to handover to communicate what has happened when the other job-sharer was not in work. This handover ideally includes a day a week when both partners are in work together to tackle pressing tasks and plan for the weeks ahead. Pairs can also use a shared email address, shared documents and calendars and WhatsApp groups to make sure that no information is missed.
Who is
job-sharing for?
Job-sharing can be adapted to work for lots of different roles and levels of seniority. We have seen job-sharing work brilliantly at all levels from runners to HODs and in so many departments from Art Dept., Costume, Hair and Makeup to Locations and ADs, to Camera, Sound and Post.
For the job-sharers, this flexible way of working is allowing them to have a sustainable career that works with whatever else is going on in their lives.
